...Immigration to the USA in 1920s...
The UNITED STATES was built on IMMIGRATION, between 1850 and 1914 millions of people in other countries saw America as a place to start a new life and around 40 million people emigrated to America; it remains the biggest movement of people in history. In 1920 American society was made up of more religions, cultures, and languages than any other country in the world.
There were many reasons why POOR MIGRANTS leave their hometown to start a new life in America:
Milions immigrants entered the United States through ELLIS ISLAND, it was opened in 1892 and the island's purpose was to act as an immigration station until it closed in 1954. This island is located at the mouth of the Hudson River between New York and New Jersey. It has been estimated that many US citizens can trace one of their ancestors to Ellis Island.
From 1900 and 1914 the peak years of immigration an average of 1.900 people passed through the station every day, most people passed through the gates in a matter of hours but others could be detained for days or weeks
